Disassociate a gamertag from my Microsoft account

I’ve checked all over the forums, but I don’t think I’ve gotten a straight answer:

I have a Microsoft account I’ve been using for years (this one) that I use for my OneDrive and for my laptop. I accidentally created a gamertag for it and I need it off. My father (for some reason) disassociated my Xbox Live child account from his account without telling me. It’s been a while and I haven’t been able to resolve anything yet because he isn’t in the house. I need to get rid of my gamertag on this account to prepare it for when I can get my Xbox Live account back.

I’d much rather not create a new Xbox account because I’ve been using it for over 9 years, and I don’t want to associate that gamertag with a new account because I’ve been using this one for several years. I would prefer to have everything in one place.

Additionally, I’ve signed into this account on my Xbox to try to associate the gamertag with a secondary account, but it’s telling me that it can’t and I must check xbox.com/AccountSwitch. For context, I have very slow internet so perhaps that is it? I’ve tried it twice.

P.S: if there is absolutely no resolution, I’d be willing to just associate my Xbox account of 9 years to a new Microsoft account :/

My sons gamertag is TreaclesNephew

My Microsoft account/email seems to be associated with TreaclesNephew.

My son hasn't used Xbox for many years.

I guess I will have to create a new gamertag then? Can I disassociate my Microsoft account from my sons gamertag?

a microsoft account and xbox account are one in the same, they are tied together and cannot be seperated.

to disassociate a xbox live account from a Microsoft Account, you will need to move that xbox live account to another Microsoft Account.

This is an error that occurs often. You need to disassociate the account on here from your microsoft ID account, and make sure your actual gamertag is the sole account using the proper email.

Hey tierranalian! To disassociate that email address from the 'Tierranalin' you'll need to change the Microsoft Account email tied to it. You should be able to do this by signing into that gamertag 'Tierranalin' on your console and changing it to a brand
new Microsoft Account email. That will free up the email to associate it with your 'tierranalian' gamertag! Let us know if these are the steps you were looking for.
