Disabling “Fast scrolling” on a controller

So my controller scrolls very quickly on menus and game menus. I don’t know how or why is this happening but I know that some people in the past have had a similar problem. I have tried re-syncing the controller, turning it off, hard resetting my Xbox and more, but none of these potential solutions work for me. Some people claim that by dropping/throwing your controller fixes the issue, however I don’t intend to damage mine. How can I disable this because it is quite frustrating.

    :)

Disabling “Fast scrolling” on a controller

    Hello, and thanks for replying!

-I’m using an Xbox one S

-I’m using an Xbox Series S/X controller

-Yes I’m using this controller wirelessly

-I’ve tried resetting my console, re-syncing the controller, updating the controller and more.

-I do not have any external devices connected to my console other than the power supply

There’s a possible chance that this issue could be caused by stick drift, because when I go to the configuration and testing section of the Xbox accessories app in settings, it shows that the left control stick is being pressed even though I’m not actually pressing down on it, however I’m not entirely sure how that ties in with the whole menu browsing being fast since if I leave my controller idle it doesn’t move automatically like having stick drift would.

I’m considering opening up the controller to see if there is anything major or obvious that’s wrong with it because from the exterior there doesn’t appear to be. But if you don’t recommend me doing that then please let me know.

Thanks again for this as I haven’t had much luck elsewhere!

Hi, codzilla584! thank you for your reply.

That means your controller's problem may be hardware-related after all.

Would you mind giving this a try?

    - Press and hold your controller's Xbox button until it shuts down.

    - Remove your controller's batteries and the Micro-USB cable (if plugged in) for a minute or two.

    - Press and hold your console's power button until it shuts down.

    - Remove all external devices from the console's USB ports.

    - Unplug your console's power cord for 5 minutes.

    - Plug the power cord back in, and make sure to use one of the wall's outlets.

    - Turn your console on and check if the issues persist.

    Best regards.

Hi, codzilla584! thank you for your reply.

Is this also happening with your other controller? or is it isolated to your current one? knowing this would help us determine the source of the issue.

    Best regards.

Hi, codzilla584! thank you for reaching out.

My name is AJ, I'm an Independent Advisor for the Xbox Community.

I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing issues with your controller.

I believe additional information is needed.

If you don't mind, I'd appreciate it if you answer the following questions:

    • May I ask which Xbox model you have?

    • May I ask what kind of Xbox controller you are using?

    • Are you using this controller wirelessly?

    • Would you mind telling me everything you've tried so far?

    • Do you have any external devices plugged into your console's USB ports?

Thank you! I'll be looking forward to your reply.

    Best regards.

Disabling “Fast scrolling” on a controller

Hi, codzilla584! thank you for your reply.

If "Test mode" is registering input from your controller, there is a good chance its problem is hardware-related. To clarify:

    • Have you tried plugging the controller in via USB cable?

    • Do you have a different controller we could try with your console?

    • Is your console enrolled in the Insider Program?

    • Have you already checked for console updates? this can be done at Settings > System > Update.

As for why it only moves when you try to navigate menus, this is likely the result of the combination of both inputs. Still, I'd advise against opening the controller.

I'll be looking forward to your reply.

    Best regards.
