Directx 10+ running slowly

Hi,

We have a 10 year old computer, intel core i7 960. Current graphics card is nVidia gtx 1060.

It runs windows 10 and recent updates have been failing. 2020h2 and 2021h2 fail to install, even though the upgrade assistant says the cpu, ram and storage requirements are fine.

All the games that used to run ok on directx 10,11, 12 are now really slow (around 3 FPS).

Games that use DirectX 9 and older are fine, as are OpenGL games.

We tried the web installer from 2010 but that hasn’t helped.

We have also tried installing the directx SDK, hoping that would trigger a refresh of Directx but that hasn’t helped.

I need an offline installer to reinstall directx 10,11,12 please, but I can’t find one.

DirectX is part of the Windows OS and can't be re-installed. DirectX12 is 100% BC with all previous versions of the API, you can't downgrade to a lower version and you don't need to anyway.

I see you've upgraded your graphics card, but your old i7 960 would be quite a bottleneck. It will work, but your CPU won't be able to keep up with your GPU, at least on titles that have been released in the last 5-6+ years.

Did you ever replace your OS drive? That 10 year old hard drive could be on the way out now, especially if it's an older mechanical HDD.

I suggest a new drive or drives. A 1TB SSD would be a good option for the OS, although you'd have to go for a SATA SSD for your old computer. Reinstall the OS by downloading the latest version using the Windows 10 creation tool and allowing the tool to make a bootable Flash drive.

This is will insure that you get the latest 2021H2 version of the OS.

DirectX 12 is fully backwards compatible with DirectX 10 and 11. DirectX12 is already on both Windows 10 and 11. DX12 Ultimate is of little use unless you have a high end AMD RX 6XXXX or NVIDIA 20XX or better graphics card/discreet graphics processor.

DirectX is software that works with your graphics hardware. If your graphics hardware does not fully support the hardware level of the version DirectX of the game you want to play, you can't play it.

For example, even though your PC/Laptop has DirectX12 installed, if your hardware only supports DirectX 10, you won't be able to run games that require DX11 or DX12.

If you could provide the system specs of your machine, we could have look if your hardware is compatible with War Thunder. Without this information there is no way to know.

Hi,

The Intel HD3000 is integrated graphics built into the 6th generation 'Sandy Bridge' series of Intel processors.

It's only capable of DirectX 10 in hardware, it can't run games that need DX11 or 12 capabilites.

This game won't run on this PC, sorry.

You can run City and Origins in DirectX 9 mode should you wish, PC versions of course. This is because huge amounts of PCs still run Windows XP, which of course only supports up to DirectX 9.

Developers don't want to miss out on those users. There are relatively few DirectX 10 and 11 only games.

So that is why I said I can see Xbox One exclusives making use of DX12. Yet if other platforms aren't running it, then are multiplatform developers really going to put in that extra effort? I doubt it.
