Did I just lose my 4 letter gamertag?

The old tag actually does get freed up when you change it. It does take time for the servers to update after you change it through so you may not be able to use it immediately. Microsoft have never specified the exact timeframe though so you just have to try changing it again. That also means though that it could be possible someone else gets the name before you get it too, so there's no guarantee you can get it back.

I asked if there’s a a period of time where the original tag is unavailable and if it will ever be available to use again. Not if I could just get the name back but with a suffix, which defeats the whole purpose of having the original tag. For example if I had the GT “table” and lost it for this same reason, I don’t want to get “table#1578” I want “table” back.

The same thing just happened to me like 10 minute ago I really hope it is cool down if not I’ve waited to switch mine and it’s just gone rest east soldier happens to the best of us

Xbox has allowed you to have a gamertag with the same name it will jusy apply a suffix number. So you can get the old name again but there will be a fee. And next to the old name will be a number.
