Did I buy a fake Xbox wireless adapter?

It's pretty common for bootleggers to fake pretty much everything when they release their fake wares. Microsoft branding, or indeed any type of branding is no guarantee of authenticity.

Will it fry your PC? Doubt it. USB can only draw a small finite amount of power. It won't kill your PC.

Couldn't say why these devices are out of stock everywhere. Perhaps MS has quietly stopped making them? While Xbox One/Series controllers have some extra features using the adaptor, they aren't essential when the controllers can be connected via Bluetooth anyway.

Thanks for the quick response. Before I got the original one I tried BT.

But the connection was horrible. Might as well have used a banana with some cabling.

So the adapter for me is a must if I want to use a controller.

The adapter is still available if you buy a controller with it. But I don't need the controller.

Don't they announce it when they stop making a product?

BT being far more generic can suffer from interference and poor signal, depending what other devices are also nearby.

Don't have any major issues with my BT connection, but then again I am using a USB dongle at the front of the PC, so very little connection loss.

Although my goto controller for PC at the moment is an 8Bitdo SN30 Pro+.

My guess is sales are, or rather were low. After all, most PC gamers still favour mouse and keyboard over controllers.

Controllers sold with adaptors maybe just old unsold stock? I know when MS stopped making the receiver for 360 wireless controllers the last ones available were bundled with controllers.

Your adapter looks very strange indeed.

You did well to return it to Amazon.

On the other hand, remember to check if your controller works in Bluetooth, it will save you from having to use an adapter
