    Deleted XboxLive Registry File

Hello. So, as part of a fix for being unable to change the account on my Xbox PC app, I deleted the XboxLive file in the registry editor under Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\XboxLive, and now, when I open the Xbox app I cannot interact with any the buttons or even close it without task manager. I tried a system restore but that didn’t work. Any ideas?

    :)

    Hello NARJAMS,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

We understand that you are trying to use Xbox app which was affected by performing a troubleshooting on Windows Registry. We usually do not suggest registry modification as resolution to any Xbox app related issues as modification done through that could affect your computer. For this, we would recommend you use the backup you made for the registry before this deletion of XboxLive.

    To restore the registry backup:

    1. Select Start , type regedit.exe, and then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    2. In Registry Editor, click File > Import.
    3. In the Import Registry File dialog box, select the location to which you saved the backup copy, select the backup file, and then click Open.

We understand that you will still have issues with Xbox account on Xbox app after restoring the backup so, if you would like to work with us after restoring this registry backup feel free to reply.

Should you have not backup the registry before the deletion of XboxLive then you may need to perform extensive back up of your files to reinstall your Windows. Please backup any important files you have in your computer and preferred themes. If you have Windows 11, please check the steps below:

    1. Make sure you back up your data
      • If you have personal data and files that you want to save, back them up to an external hard drive, USB thumb drive, SD card, or cloud location (such as OneDrive) before you begin to reinstall Windows 11.
    2. Make sure Windows 11 is activated
      • Windows 11 must be activated after it’s reinstalled. Usually this happens automatically after you go online. For more info, see "Activating after reinstalling Windows" in Activate Windows.
    3. You’ll need to link your Microsoft account to your digital license before you reinstall Windows
      • In Windows 11, you must link your Microsoft account to the Windows 11 digital license on your PC before you can reactivate Windows. For more info, see "Associate your Windows license with your Microsoft account" in Reactivating Windows after a hardware change.
    4. You'll need to reactivate Windows 11 if you've made a significant hardware change to your PC
      • If you reinstall Windows 11 after you make a significant hardware change to your PC (such as replacing the motherboard), it may no longer be activated. You can use the Activation troubleshooter to reactivate Windows. For more info, see Using the Activation troubleshooter.
    5. You’ll need to reinstall the edition of Windows that matches your license
      • When you reinstall Windows 11, you'll need to select the edition of Windows that matches your digital license. For example, if you’re running Windows 11 Home, you’ll need to install Windows 11 Home again.
      • To see which edition of Windows you're running, go to Start > Settings > System > About . Your edition is listed under Windows specifications.

For details you may check and read this support article: Reinstall Windows - Microsoft Support

Should you need assistance with all these steps we recommend you reach out to Windows Support team. Please let me know if you would like to ask for steps on how to reach out to them.

We look forward to your response. Kindly let us know, if there is any misunderstanding or clarifications of our description by sending us a reply.

I get "Sorry we can't sign you in. Try signing in at xbox.com then start this app again".

I was having the same issue. When you uninstall the game and reinstall, Microsoft uses the same bad information in the registry to install the file again.

    Here's the solution:

Open the registry and find #gamename# and delete the key. Then repeat find (F3).

This will take some time. If you find keys that will not let you delete them, it's because there's another user that has the game installed. You must login that user and edit the registry again deleting all the keys with the #gamename#.

    My #gamename# was taptiles
