You can also create a family account and add funds to family members accounts that way. Keep in mind some purchases require a credit card, Like gamertag changes or buying/downloading 360 titles. I wouldn't say Microsoft's service is "garbage" I think you
were just confused by what to do and frustrated because of that. I can totally empathize with that. I'm sorry to hear you're so upset. I hope you found the answers you were looking for here.

Thanks for coming to the forums with you issue. Yes you can have a Microsoft account without it being attached to Xbox. When you need to purchase something on the Xbox though you do need to merge them. Also with some purchases like backward compatible games
currency is not able to be used on the Xbox one. However you can use the currency for them games if you have a 360. Once currency is added to an account there is no way to remove it. So they will not be able to transfer it back.

I want to use my Microsoft account balance to pay for something, but I don't see it listed as a payment option.

You can't use the money in your Microsoft account to purchase content from the Xbox 360 Marketplace.

For the try this, there are usually multiple things that could be the issue or problem. So one thing may not help but another will.

I don't think there's an actual solution to the problem - until MS lets you merge or transfer stuff between accounts easily that is. They do have the possibility, but it's limited to situations where there are court orders involved (think about a divorce
type situation).

One possible work around has already been mentioned - the family system. I don't think it'll work though.

Another option that hasn't been discussed is the "Buy as a gift" option - on the account with the money (duh) you buy the gift for your main account. Depending on what you want to buy, it might work out. Again - it's not a solution, but at least it's a
work around.

Are you using an Xbox one?

An Xbox 360?

Xbox 360s have the capability to have what are called offline profiles that are not connected to MS accounts.

Accounts on Xbox Ones have to have a MS account attached to them.

If you are on an Xbox one then that means you have two different MS accounts if the one that you put gift card on the computer you would have needed to be signed into the account that was attached to your Xbox One profile.
