  1. Creating an account for a company-owned Xbox using a company-owned email

Some years ago the company I work with bought an Xbox for the break room and I was tasked with setting it up. No big deal - I've created an Office365 shared mailbox (so appropriate people can have access in the event I'm not around) and used that to set up a Live account for that Xbox. All good.

The company recently moved to a new office and we now have a second Xbox so that more people can play. Welp - the same account can't be used on both Xboxes because if one's in use then it blocks running any game on the other one - annoying, but I can understand why this restriction is there. However, MS has also implemented restrictions on Live account creation and I can no longer use an Office365 email to set up a NEW Live account!

OK, so... if I can't use an Office365 account how should I set up an account for a company-owned Xbox? I don't want to create a free Google account nor do I want to create a free Outlook account because, after all, that's why we have our own domain and I want other people to have access to the mailbox (shared mailboxes are perfect for this). So what should I do?

    :)

I think you are missing the point here Kathy. This restriction that MS came up with affects many more users than you might think, myself included.

We use MS O365 with the family with our own domain. Since I can't have MS email with my own domain with the consumer product, on top of the O365 Family subscription, I have a 4-user Exchange plan for our email. Although this is an absolute pain (each user has now two MS accounts), it's the only way to make it work. However, I cannot use those email addresses for Skype or an Xbox account since they are considered business accounts.

So in short, it is not possible to have your own domain name, have your email with MS, and have an Xbox or Skype account with your own email address.

I'm sorry to say, but this is just dumb. I spoke to your Support team on many occasions and came to understand one of the reasons for these limitations is that the user databases run on completely different systems/servers. However, that doesn't make it an acceptable excuse.

It would love to see this changed, especially since it looks like Apple seems to do the opposite of what MS is doing here, and I don't want to switch to Apple... Time to rethink your restrictions.

Creating an account for a company-owned Xbox using a company-owned email

    Hi Mateusz Bender (mbender),

Welcome to Xbox Community Forum. Thank you for sharing your concern with us today and we hope that all is well.

We understand that you are trying to set up your Company Xbox and would like to ask on how to create one using company email domain.

You are correct that business email account affiliated with Microsoft 365 Business subscription can no longer be created as personal Microsoft account. In that case, if the email account is not part of the subscription then you might be able to create it as new personal Microsoft account. However, if that will not work, then it would be best for you to create an Outlook.com or Hotmail.com (or third party) email account and add a business email account as security information of the account.

Have a great day! If you have further concerns kindly create a new thread using this link - Create a new question or start a discussion.

Thanks for the reply, Mateusz Bender (mbender).

It could be an understatement why the words: company, test, Xbox, account or Microsoft is not allowed to be used in creating an email account from this site (account.microsoft.com). If anyone can create an account with that in their email address containing these words it will never a challenge for hackers or social engineer to bypass your email. Please understand that this email address is a consumer email.

Should you like a suggestion from me, you may try to combine:

(Your company name)_(gaming/break/recreational/entertainment)_room (at) Outlook or Hotmail email account.

Please use words that would emphasize the use of the account and be wiser and a little bit unpredictable. If any case, you need help with naming your accounts, you may ask anyone from your team, could be your boss or IT persons for suggestion as they will also be responsible for holding the credentials of the account.

For your other concern, we have suggested to add a business email as your security information not as an alias of the account because alias means you will need to use a consumer account. To make sure you will have the answer to your EDIT 2, please check this guide and let us know if it works:

    1. Kindly go to this link: Additional security options (live.com)

    2. Please select Add a new way to sign in or verify

    3. Select Email a code.

    4. It will take you to another page where your alternate email (or the Xbox company email from the first floor of your building or any account your IT will provide) will be emailed.

    5. You will be asked to enter the code from the alternate email / business email (or the Xbox company email from the first floor of your building where you have set up the Xbox or any account your IT will provide) and then you will see it on the list of Ways to prove who you are from the same link.

If you have a better idea of how things should work with account, please sign in to https://account.microsoft.com/

Then select feedback at the bottom of the page.

Lastly, submit your idea or suggestion or feedback for improvement.

    Adding. Aliases. Doesn't. Work.

I can at best add a 2FA company email. MS prevents it from being used as a login method. Period.

As such your links are useless.

I already added a company email as an alternate. IT DOESN'T WORK FOR LOGIN PURPOSES. This only works for sign-in verification and this doesn't cut it.

Imagine this - another company administrator comes in and they don't know the non-company email address used for the Xbox account (either to make a purchase or perhaps just to add it to the Xbox itself after a reset or for whatever other reason). They would easily find the email account under our domain name but using that to log in won't work. There's no way to get in without knowing the original email, and with the naming restrictions in place on @outlook.com I'm forced to pick a more arbitrary name (but, really, even if those keywords weren't restricted it wouldn't make things any better).

Of course, I can (and will if forced to) write the name down and share it as needed. But it's still a terrible system. Microsoft has effectively blocked usage of customer-owned domains and emails from non-company activities (i.e. Live account). So how SHOULD it work? Either the restriction on O365 email usage for Live ID creation should be lifted (pre-restriction accounts exist and work and I can't see a good reason for the restriction other than to annoy customers and administrators) OR you should permit O365 accounts to sign up for anything Live can be used for.
