Thanks for reaching out to the forums. We understand you have question on an external hard drive. You do not need to leave it plugged in all the time. However, if you constantly unplug and plug it back in. It could possible wear out the USB port. Personally
I leave mine plugged in as I have keep my games up to date so it updates games when console is off.
