Controller smelling like burnt plastic

I've a 3 year old xbox one controller. I was playing a game with the controller plugged in to an USB. Just now, the controller stopped working suddenly, and its giving out a smell of burnt plastic. I tried putting batteries and changing cables, but it doesn't work. Any idea what happened?

Electronics should have that nice new plastic smell but if it smells like burning plastic then you should probably exchange it.

Locate the battery pack on the back of the controller.

Pinch the pack between your thumb and your index finger, with you index finger depressing the button on the top of the pack.

Pull the battery pack off the back to reveal the battery springs and contacts. The serial number will be written below a bar code toward the bottom of the battery area.
