Controller not syncing and "you'll need the internet for this"

Last night I got the message "you'll need the internet for this" so clicked the only option, ok or cancel.

I could still play games an such so when I finished, I turned off my console and now (next morning) my controller won't turn on the console, I have to use the on button. The controller won't sync, it just flashes for a bit then turns off.

The message about the internet came back up straight away but has since disappeared. Even now I can't navigate the main menu or access settings or anything to try to fix the initial problem.

Are these two events linked somehow or is it purely coincidence?

If it's under warranty or can be returned for a replacement I would try that. If not, here is a Xbox Support page with troublshooting steps to get your controller working again. If none of this works, let us know.

I tried to re-sync the controller but no luck. It flashes faster but to no avail.

And yes, I've wired it using micro USB but it still doesn't have any effect, just the normal flashing Xbox button.

Have you tried to reassociate your controller to the console pressing the sync buton on both devices?

By the way, you can connect your controller to the console via an USB cable so you can (for the moment) navigate console menu and try to fix the first problem.

Thanks. A power cycle did the trick if that's what it's called. Controller is fine and no more error message.
