    Controller and menus malfunctioning?

I have not turned my XBox One on in months. But a friend bought me Overwatch, and we both set aside tonight to play. I boot up, and find my sidebar menus almost inaccessible. Any menu that I'm in, when I press on the stick, it just rapidly cycles between
the last and second-to-last options on the menus. It will not go any higher on the list; it's not like it's just speeding through the entire list endlessly. ONLY the last two options, and this is any sidebar menu.

But it's weird, because it ONLY applies to those sidebar menus. For example, I was able to move through the onscreen keyboard to put in my XBL password without any issues. I can move through dashboard tiles okay, if a bit too quickly, but just not menus.
I tried to access my installed games, and this same thing happened; I couldn't move the cursor up, it just vibrates. Pressing down does nothing at all. It also seems to move way too fast through these menus.

When I was able to access three different games (Mad Max, Lego Star Wars (BC), and Halo Master Chief Collection), the games all played absolutely beautifully, with no stick drift or anything whatsoever. But when I pressed the home button to access the menu
and get back to the dashboard? It did it again.

    TROUBLESHOOTING:

I started by hard resetting and fully unplugged twice. Then I re-calibrated the controller by turning the controller off, inserting the USB cable into the controller, holding the D-pad down, and plugging the other end into the console.

However, I don't think it's the controller. Like I said, my games all handle perfectly well, no drift or issue whatsoever.

I've factory reset twice, using Bind+Eject+Power to boot from a USB stick, loaded with the systemupdate file downloaded from Microsoft. The first time I did it, I kept all my games. Still acting up. And yet, again I tried three games, and the controller
handles JUST FINE in-game! Smooth as butter.

And so, I factory reset a second time. Wiped everything. Walked through settings manually, didn't import anything.

    IT'S STILL DOING IT!!!

    Help? Please?

    :)

    Anyone else having this issue?

    Anyone?

I have hard reset, taken batteries out, turned controller on and off 3/4 times and the controller will not work in GTA 5 but works in the menus...

    Strange Problem with Menus/Controller

Hey there! Yeah, definitely detailed Controller and menus malfunctioning? :) From what you've put here, it sounds like the system is acting like the B-button is being pressed constantly, no matter what you do? Here's what I would start with:

    • First off, let's make sure that there's no other controllers around that you don't know about (like, if you have a media remote, maybe hanging out under a couch cushion? Not that I've had that happen to me, but I actually have.)
    • Then let's try re-syncing the controller to the console by pushing the lil button on the top of the controller and also the one on console.
    • If there's still no love there, I'd give that B-button a few good taps and see if you feel anything sticky in there.
    Any luck?

  4. Controller and menus malfunctioning?

    Greetings!

Very sorry to hear about the weird menu issues on your console and we are happy to help troubleshoot.

A few things we want to check first are as follows:

    • Is the console plugged into a power strip or surge protector?
    • Which version of the Xbox One console is this on?
    • Does the same thing happen with another controller?
    • Does the same thing happen when the controller is wired while in use?
    • Are you using an external hard drive with the console, if so, where is it plugged in?

Post back and let us know!

    • Is the console plugged into a power strip or surge protector?

It is plugged into a surge protector.

    • Which version of the Xbox One console is this on?

The original XBox One, not the One X /Scorpio. It was the Master Chief Collection bundle pack, purchased about 3 years ago.

    • Does the same thing happen with another controller?

I don't know, I only own one controller. I could test it with my Rock Band guitar, I suppose?

    • Does the same thing happen when the controller is wired while in use?

    Yes

    • Are you using an external hard drive with the console, if so, where is it plugged in?

No, just the base system, no externals.

    RESOLUTION:

So I guess the folks over at /r/xboxone was right. It was the controller somehow. Not sure why it's only having issues in menus, but it was the problem.

I tried using my Rock Band guitar to navigate the menus, and was able to use it just fine. Then I loaded up the XBox App on my phone, and found I was able to navigate that way with no issue. As I said, the controller works
just fine while in-game, so I guess until I can spare $45 for a new controller, I'll just kinda have to use the app to navigate the dashboard, and play with the controller.

    Consider this issue solved.
