Connecting Xbox One to home theatre devices

I have an Xbox one that I initially set up as follows: comcast cable box HDMI out into XBox One HDMI IN. Then Xbox One HDMI Out into HD TV HDMI IN. Then when I connect TV to AV Receiver it doesn't allow for surround sound. A guy at best buy said to
never connect cable TV box straight to the Xbox One. So I have tried that, but the Xbox One says no connection to TV.

Honestly, is the only way to connect an Xbox into my entertainment system via connecting cable TV box directly to the Xbox only? That means I can't watch TV or use internet streaming apps on the TV unless the Xbox is turned on. Is this true? Help an old
guy out please.

Cable Box HDMI Out to Xbox One HDMI In

Xbox One HDMI Out to Home Theatre HDMI In

Home Theatre HDMI Out to HDTV In

.

If using optical audio for sound, connect the toslink from the Xbox One to the HT.

 

Connecting to a home theatre

HDMI does indeed carry an audio signal. If you run every thing through a reciever then all you need to do is connect to it via HDMI. You only need to use a separate cables if you are hooking the HDMI directly to the TV and still want your audio to come
from a separate sound system. My system is currently hooked up with only HDMI. Xbox>Onkyo 7.1 receiver>Samsung HDTV. 2 HDMI cables. That is all.

 

Hello you are able to connect your cable box HDMI and xbox HDMI separately into your tb that way you can use your tv and stream apps etc. separate from your xbox. Than whenever you want to use your xbox just switch over to the hdmi channel its on to use
it.
