    Confused - Does 4K require HDR?


    When I go into the xbox diagnostics screen (example here: https://i.rtings.com/assets/products/vuBkLgWU/samsung-qn90a-qled/xboxsx-large.jpg) with HDR10 turned off it shows that I don't get 4K at either 60 or 120 fps. If I turn HDR10 back on, then it look just like the example (everything working).

    I thought 4K and HDR were 2 separate things entirely. It seems weird that turning off HDR affects 4K display. Is this a known thing, or is something in my chain of equipment (xbox, cable, 2.1 capable TV) busted?

    In other words, I don't get 4K @ 60 or 120 unless I have HDR10 turned on. Is that normal?

    I would try another cable first, one that is 6 feet/2m or less just to rule that out

    Try turning off HDR on the TV and see what happens. You can disable it on the port itself. I don’t know the OS on that TV so I can’t walk you through it by memory

    Samsung Qn90A, so def compatible. HDMI running into the appropriate 2.1 port on the TV. Turning HDR off on the xBox "TV and Display Options" menu in Settings.

    Reason I am messing around with this is because I have some periodic HDMI drop outs, and I suspect that it's my long, "2.1" 20 foot HDMI cable (I know they don't make any 20 foot certified HDMI 2.1 cables). Turned off HDR on the theory that maybe that was too much bandwidth to try to fit down a potentially substandard cable. I can live with non-HDR content, as long as it's otherwise 4k & 120 (with whatever games I have that actually support this).

    What Tv do you have. They are indeed two different things. Are you urning HDR off on the Xbox or the TV?

    Yeah, it behaves the same way with the cable that came with the xbox. And whether or not the HDR is enabled or not on the port.

    First pic shows "expected" behavior with HDR turned on at the XBOX... 2nd pic (scroll down a bit - "HDR10 OFF" pic) shows the "strange" behavior with it turned off. I mean, the TV is behaving like I would expect.. still getting 4K and 120 (ok, 119) hz... but the Xbox screen that says "Your TV setup does not support 4k UHD at 120 hz" is what I have a problem with...

    No 4K without HDR (xbox one x)

    you need hdr for 4k output

    I don't think you fully understand

    Uhd and hdr are required for 4k output

    Unless you have an xbox one s not a x

    You can't play in 4k

    4k is only for.movies or streaming sources which require both uhd and hdr

    But.xbox.one x will do 4k gaming
