COD Ray Tracing and 120hz

Evening,

Silly question but just want to double check.

I enabled ray-tracing and had the Xbox seriesX set to 120hz the quality of game was awful and looked worse than an old Nintendo Wii would this kind of effect be normal if both were switched on - I know they shouldn’t both be on but what would happen if they did?

Another thing is when I tried 60hz and ray-tracing on for COD: Cold War I didn’t think the graphics looked any better than when having it set to 120hz with it actually more sharper in detail with the later

I only tried fiddling with this as my OCD was through the roof because I initially was trying to see if it was a normal glitch for the gun selection screen online to struggle or delay some gun textures appearing when scrolling through your load outs.

I’ll download Forza and see how I get on - I just didn’t think the game looked any better with Ray-tracing on, it looked worse. I don’t know how I managed to get both Ray-tracing and 120hz - activated at the same time but the graphics looked horrible and stuttered.

More so concerned that the Xbox was maybe faulty

And what are you trying to do 4k 120 Hz you won't get much difference

Most games are designed for 60hz and 4k

Ray tracing affects lighting and particle effects

If you play forza 7 you can see the difference in reflections and particles like a dust storm

This is fundamental misunderstanding of what Ray Tracing is, what it looks like and how it works in games.

For example, in Forza Horizon on the Xbox Series X, RT is only visible (and more importantly, actually on) in the garage sections when you can view your own car. It uses real-time raytraced reflections. In game, RT isn't actually running. Only the PC version can have RT on in-game. This why you wouldn't notice it.

Ray Tracing isn't just one thing, it can be one or a combination of effects. Fundamentally Ray Tracing is all about lighting. RT can be all or one or multiples of the examples of RT below:

RT Shadows - Realistic shadows that look like real life shadows
RT reflections - one of the biggest and more noticeable RT techniques. Basically realistic reflections that are both high quality and don't disappear when no longer out of screen space. Traditional reflections typically use SSR (Screen Space Reflections) which can't show reflections that are out of range. They're also typically low resolution compared to RT reflections.
RT Ambient occlusion - occluding areas of a scene that should be in shadow via hardware (like under a wooden desk in the corner of a room. subtle, but more realistic than traditional rasterisation.
RT Lighting - Lighting that bounces and sticks on to other parts of a scene more realistically
RT Global Illumination - using realistic sources of light to light a scene or a room.

For example, this is RT reflections on and off in Watchdogs Legion.

The difference here is in the puddles of water at the bottom the screen. With RT reflections they look far more realistic.

The game on the Series S doesn't look as great as the Series X. There's no ray tracing and you can't get 120hz as well. But it performs way better than the Xbox One for sure.
