Actually, as long as you are using the same version of Minecraft, then you should be able to play online together regardless of what device you both are using. So if your friend is playing this from game pass on his device, then you should be using the same version of the game and can play together.

Simply put. No. It is not currently possible to play local multiplayer Java to bedrock Minecraft. (assuming your not running the Minecraft PS4 Edition of Minecraft). Which would still be no. There are plugins for java that allow bedrock clients to connect to java servers but that feature is not on current consoles. Sorry for the inconvenience. Happy gaming!
