Please make sure both accounts have an active Xbox Live Gold subscription or Game Pass Ultimate subscription.

You should be able to play online together with that setup. If your son is using a child account. Please make sure to manage the privacy settings of the child account using the parent account at this link, https://account.xbox.com/settings.

Select the child account there so that we can modify the privacy settings of it then under the tab Xbox One/Windows 10 Online Safety.
