    Hello, I would like to claim a currently unused gamertag, but when I go to change my current one to it i get an error code saying it is unuseable/taken. When I try to change it on xbox it says that the name is taken and puts 4 numbers after it even though it isnt taken.

    My name is AJ, I'm an Independent Advisor for the Xbox Community.

    Unfortunately, this means the Gamertag is already taken.

    It may seem like this Gamertag is not registered when looking it up on Xbox, but it could still be in use by an inactive/deactivated account. At this moment, I'm afraid there is no way to request a specific Gamertag to be released back to the public.

    Any word on gamertag resets?

    Op is not asking for a free gamertag change.

    No one knows when or if they will release any unused gamertags in the future,highly doubt it after last time.

    Remember gamertags are used on other services,not just xbox live,so you can't know if the tag is unused or not.

    You can't buy unused gamertags I'm afraid. You will have to wait until Microsoft release the unused gamertag which they do occasionally. It could be years though.

    The gamertags are there to stay...Banned or unused...Steam made it really good in this case..So you can change the name but for scoialising it is easier to have a unique tag that is not considered a privacy info
