Changing primary emails

Do you have access to both accounts?

You need to have access to those two accounts to perform the steps. Please note that it is only applicable if your main email address is a 3rd party email address and is not a Microsoft email address. We cannot transfer a Microsoft email address from one account to another.

If that was 3rd party, you have to sign it in via https://account.microsoft.com/ > Your info > Edit account info. You have to add a new email address to free up your main email address so you can add it to your current Xbox account.

There is a process to change the primary email on a Microsoft account.

First add it as an alias do not make it primary. Make sure it works correctly to sign in. Promote that email to primary and again validate. Last remove the former primary address from the account.

You can search on how to change primary email on MS account and should find a step by step guide.

Yeah, this is a real drag that you can't do this on Xbox One. I really don't want to rehook the 360 just to do this. I can't believe there isn't a way to do this on the web!

Thanks for reaching out to the forums. We understand you have issue with deactivating an account. You can still use the email when you deactivate an account. The only thing you cant do is sign into anything Microsoft/Xbox. Also if it is a Microsoft email
you cant delete it off the old account as it will then be deleted.

WarningWhen removing an email alias that’s a Microsoft domain (such as @Outlook.com, @Live.com, or @Hotmail.com), that email is completely deleted from our systems and can no longer be used to send or receive emails. It won’t
be available for use again as an alias on another account. Microsoft does not recycle email addresses, so it may not be reclaimed at a future time.

To change the primary email address associated with your Xbox account, please follow these steps:
1. Sign in to your Microsoft account by visiting.
2. Click on “Your info” at the top of the page.
3. Select “Manage how you sign in to Microsoft”.
4. Choose the email address you want to remove and click on “Remove”.
5. If the email address you want to remove is your primary alias, select a new primary alias before removing the old one.
6. To add a new email address, click on “Add email” within the “Account alias” section.
7. Type in the new email address and click on “Add alias”.
8. Follow the instructions shown to verify the address you just entered.
9. Click on “Make Primary” to make the new email address the primary one for your account.

Please note that if you remove an email alias that’s connected to a Microsoft domain (such as @Outlook.com, @Live.com, or @Hotmail.com), that email is completely deleted from Microsoft’s systems and can’t be used to send or receive emails. It won’t be available for use again as an alias on another account. Microsoft doesn’t recycle email addresses, so it can’t be reclaimed at a future time.
