Changed email for account, can't log into XBOX live anymore

My original account for Microsoft, xbox and iTunes account was a @live.com address. My son took over my xbox profile and made it his own last year, i finally got around to changing the email so it can be his own account and log in but now he can't log into
xbox live anymore after i did it. I went to edit profile>change how you sign in to Microsoft and created a new alias. I made the new alias (my sons email) the primary sign in and deleted my @live address. which i found out now it messed up my email account,
it was mostly junk and spam anyways so this was a good reason to finally delete that account anyways. I got my apple id, Microsoft account and icloud updated for myself with a new email but my son can no longer sign into his (used to be mine) account for
xbox live.

The new email i used for my son was a @yahoo address, which is not his Microsoft address. my question is does the new log in need to be the same as his Microsoft email which is a gmail address? I don't want to delete everything and start over, not sure
he would forgive me for wiping out his gamer tag and profile thus deleting all his achievments.

It can take a bit for the new changes to register and take effect, You do have to sign the profile out and back in as well, When you sign in on Xbox.com via desktop using the new info what happens? Does it show your sons gamertag or yours?

Xbox 1, signed in with yahoo email and it shows that email and its the same gamer tag. This is why im stumped, it looks like everthing is correct but it wont sign into xbox live. I think somehow its still linked to my @live account but it shouldnt be since
i deleted that alias from profile settings. Im out of town this week when i get home saturday ill try again and post the messages im getting.

we are signed in with the new email alias but cannot connect to xbox live. It shows his new @yahoo email instead of my old @live email.

Whatever account you made as the new primary alias on is the one that he would need to use to sign in with.

UPDATE... IT'S FIXED!!

I thought maybe it was trying to tie my old account/email that doesn't exists anymore to my payment option, i deleted the card and added a new credit card for payment option. All is right in the world of my sons online gaming. Thank you everybody for the
reply's and support, i knew it had to be something silly.

extra info if someone else see's this having same problem. When he logged on to profile it showed his gamer tag, picture, friends and all achievements. When he went to play a game a big blue screen came up and said "We couldn't get your latest saved data
(shows his gamer tag), Try again or use this game or app offline"
