Unfortunately, you cannot separate his Xbox account from your Microsoft account (hotmail address). Please note that Microsoft and Xbox account are just one single account. I am afraid it's gonna be tied forever in your Microsoft account and your son has to use the same credentials as yours.

Removing your hotmail address from that account means deleting it completely and it cannot be recreated. So if your hotmail address is very important to you, I don't recommend you removing it from your aliases. You may instead add a new alias or email address and let you son use it as his login credential but still he has to use the same password as yours.

There is a easier way to go about this you should be able to change your email in the account section and if it does infact say you will loose your downloadable content/games then I would suggest contacting the customer service team and having an agent do
it online.

You will not lose any progress to that account even if you change your email address because they are already stored to your Xbox profile and changing the email address will not change the data or renew it.
