That is a very odd situation, so it sounds to me like you have an Xbox Live Gold membership still. So, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Billing Website to see if they show you a reason for the conversion. If you don't see anything there, please request a call from a billing agent on the
Contact Us page, and they'll be happy to take a look for you!

You wouldn't need to cancel the current one. You can purchase a yearly membership at any time and turn on auto renew for it to renew yearly. There are a few retailers that offer deals on gold subscriptions. Places like Amazon can oftentimes sell a year of
gold for less.

Gamertag changes are seperate from memberships. Gamertag changes are always 800pts unless otherwise stated. Buying a new membership doesn't prorate/cancel out the price of a Gamertag change.

Change it from your console is an option for you:

Console steps: Add or change your membership payment

Sign in using your Xbox LIVE gamertag.

Go to Settings, and then select Account.

Go to Your Memberships, and then select the membership that you want to change (for example, Xbox LIVE Gold).

Select Change Payment Options.

Do one of the following:

Select a payment option for your membership.

Select Manage Payment Options to add or update a payment option.
