    Capturing suddenly not working for External Storage.


    Ok, so this is not the first time that I've had this problem, as I've had it a few years ago too.

    So I been recording game clips for a few days and just today I was going to play and capture about 50 minutes of The Walking Dead Definitive Series with the "Start Recording" part of the Capture options. So I was using my phone as a stopwatch so I wouldn't have to bring up the menu which sometimes pauses the games to see where I was time wise. Problem was, it said it wasn't recording. So I tested a record the last 2 minutes or so and it didn't even try to record. I clicked start recording and it says recording started but isn't showing the timer. Now keep in mind its set to external. I decided to set it to internal to test that and it does still work on that for both "record last # minutes" and "start recording". So I think I narrowed it down to an issue recording to external. I pulled the drive out and reinserted and tried again on external and its still not working. I dont think the drive is screwed as it has no problem detecting it or folder on it from the view contents part of the UI.

    This is on a Series X and I remember this happened on my Xbox One before with a different hard drive and I think on internal as well back then which made me think it was a software bug of sorts.

    I may have figured out the problem. Though I looked at the hard drive from Xbox storage GUI it showed the gamedvr folder but it was empty which was wrong and I knew it. Got me to thinking about putting it in my laptop and seeing if it was corrupt. It was and was able to fix it. It repaired and showed all the videos. I think using a file explorer from the xbox app store may have corrupted it. I deleted all the videos and decided to try it again and it seems to have fixed it. Its recording to external again.

    Hi,

    The Storage Epansion card from Seagate is for Xbox game installs/downloads. It can't be used to record gameplay, which is why your Google searches were unsuccessful.

    All you need to capture externally is an inexpensive USB 3.0 storage device. A suitable flash drive can do it.
