can't unswap triggers

Thanks for responding. I'm using Xbox One and no, the "restore to default" option is not greyed out. Regardless of whether or not I check the box to swap triggers, they are still reversed. Do I have to pay for a Xbox Live membership in order for the
data to update to the servers? Should I unplug the external HDD before doing the full reset? Also, what do I do to prevent Xbox from formatting the HDD once it is detected and asks if I want to use it for game saves?

Is the restore to default option in the button mapping menu just greyed out and not selectable? That generally means the controller may already be at default.

If you go through Ease of Access and then Controller>Button Mapping, the Xbox Accessories app should load as that is where controller customization is done. From there you should see your controller and then you can Configure and bring up the customization
window. From there, a menu on the left should show "Swap Triggers" with a box and just make sure the box is not selected and the triggers will default back to normal.

Factory resetting your Xbox will not lose your data as your data is tied to the account and backs up to an online Xbox Live Cloud Storage so nothing is ever lost. After a reset, the data will sync form the servers. As long as you play while online, your
data automatically updates to the servers. Also a factory reset will not reformat your external hard rive and erase what is in there. That is even a good option if you ever have to do a full reset so that you have all your games and apps already installed,
but there is a reset option to keep games and apps installed to always try first.

Go ahead and try the steps mentioned by EggsBoxJuan first which is what is called a hard reset and power cycle. Then let us know if the triggers are still swapped.

You don't have to pay for an Xbox Live Gold membership to back up data to the servers but you do have to be connected to Xbox Live through internet.

It's doesn't really matter whether you leave the external HD plugged in during the reset or unplugged since the reset won't affect the external hard drive, it's a reset of the console's operating system.

A reset will not forget your already formatted external hard drive. It only needs to be formatted to the Xbox One once. Your hard drive is already formatted for use on Xbox One's.

Hi, if you power the Xbox and controller on, then press and hold the power button on the Xbox for 10 seconds, when the Xbox powers off pull the power cord out of the back of the Xbox, wait 2 minutes, reconnect the power cord and power the Xbox on using
the power button on the Xbox, then power the controller on, are the trigger buttons still swapped ? Or even just try resycning the controller to the Xbox if that doesn't help any.

I tried the hard reset and still no luck. I feel like my only option left is to return to factory settings. That's why I was asking what do I do to prevent Xbox from formatting the external HDD once it is detected and asks if I want to use it for game
saves?
