Can't redeem Xbox live Gold code

I'm not able to redeem a prepaid code, either on the console or on the xbox.com site.

On the console, from the marketplace, I get the screen where you either connect a kinect or manually type in a code. At the end of the instructions on that page is an error code - 0x8ca50011. When I click the button to enter the 25 character code, I get
the whirling wait icon for a few minutes, then it dumps me back to the marketplace. I have also tried going into subscriptions in Parameters, just to see if i can buy a subscription directly (i.e., with another payment method other than prepaid card) - the
same thing happens, except it cycles round "Learn more about Live Gold".

On the xbox.com site, I have tried using Win10/Edge, Win10/Chrome, OS X/Safari and IOS/Safari, with the same (lack of) results. I've also tried connecting outside the firewall and disabling the (Microsoft) antivirus etc, to no avail. Firstly, the site
is i-n-c-r-e-d-i-b-l-y slow to respond to anything (like minutes sometimes). Secondly, the items in the XBOX menu bar don't work - with the exception of the XBOX logo on the left: the Microsoft menu option at the top do work, however. Interestingly, the
"Sign in" button doesn't work either. I then scroll down and follow the path through eventually to the Redeem a Code page, when I click on the "Redeem" button, guess what happens?? You got it - nothing. I've tried entering the code in my Microsoft account
details - but there it just says it's an Xbox code and forwards me to the Redeem a Code page. Sigh.

I've also tried using other payment methods on the website - obviously, it didn't work.

Trying to get help through the support pages is a massive waste of time. I eventually got a reply from the @xboxsupport twitter feed, but they just ended up saying I would need to use chat. Chat doesn't work; so here I am.

Just for the record, I've tried hard resetting the console etc as well. And I've tried on the French site as well.

I'm seriously thinking about setting fire to the console and going to get a PS4 - which I'm sure will work. Anything would be better than this - all I'm trying to do is the simplest commercial transaction known to man - you've got something I want, I've
got something you want - let's exchange... But we don't seem to be able to achieve this simple, this little thing.

Please help if you can.

Hello - yes, I've tried hard resetting the console. I haven't gone as far as a factory settings reset, because my son has a ton of game progress saved on it..
