Can't play specific 4k-Blu-ray on Xbox One S (0x91d70001)

This month I bought the new 4k-releases of the "Lord of the Rings"-movies (They are from the same region as my console) and tried to play each disc through my Xbox One S and its (horrible) Blu-ray player app.

All discs worked (altough I had to restart my console almost each time (srsly microsoft?)) except for the first disc of the first extended movie. It just shows the error-message 0x91d70001 (Try another disc. This one cannot be played).

I tried every fix I could find on forums and from Microsoft people:

- reinstall Blu-ray app

- delete permanent storage

- 10 sec console reboot

- unplug HDMI-cable while error-message is on screen

- all of the above in every possible order

As I said, all other disc work and there is no visual damage on the disc that doesn't work (and it's brand new). I also don't believe it's a hardware problem on the console, since many people have complained that a new console displays the same error-code.

Now my question(s):

- is there an actual fix that might be more complicated but ALWAYS works? Like a third-party application that actually works?

- why is there no sign of an actually working blu-ray app? This is literally false advertising as it does not deliver on UHD-Playback

- how come the microsoft/xbox-support page is so unhelpful? There was no way for me to discribe my problem through those predetermined options

The app does deliver

There have been problems with recent Warner discs, and unfortunely the BD app likely takes backseat to stuff like Call of Duty sending the box into protect mode.

im sure an update will psuh soon. In the meantime you can use the digital code to get you through. Its not as good by a longshot i agree.

Xbox One and Xbox One S are 1080P Gaming

Xbox One S will play 4K Blu Ray's

Xbox One X will play Game in 4K if they are Enhanced with 4K Support + 4k Blu Ray support

They Xbox One X will also Upscale on a 1080p screen so you will see some benefit of the Xbox One X

Are specifically having this issue with the 4K Blue-Ray version of Oblivion as well? I saw that you mentioned 4K Blu-Rays worked before the update, did you set up your Xbox One S and try a 4K Blu-ray before updating?

Thanks for posting this up, are there any other Universal Studios 4K Blu-Ray movies that you can try out as well? In the meantime, please try uninstalling the Blu-Ray app, power cycle your Xbox One S console by holding the power button, and then reinstall
the Blu-Ray app.

The Xbox One can't play 4K Blu ray discs at a hardware level and a firmware update will not be able to add this feature to the console. You will need to purchase an Xbox One S to be able to play 4K discs.

Internet Expert

"Ultra HD" Blu-Rays will play in 4K. Standard Blu-Rays will play in 1080p.

The Xbox One S will only output to the highest resolution offered by the Blu-Ray disc it plays.

I suppose this design choice was in mind because 4K/UHD-TVs already process and upscale a lower resolution image to "cleanly" use all of the 3840x2160 pixels, so it's not putting unnecessary load on the Xbox One S CPU.
