Can't get mute symbol off and headset sound and mic not working!

Noticed my headset was not working, and started to trouble shoot it. I power cycled the xbox several times. I bought a new controller, and updated it several times. And still the headset won't work. No sound and mic not working. I tried every option under
settings and sound. I checked my privacy settings, and made sure it was on adult. I bought another controller. Updated the second controller several times. Went through all the same steps listed above in the settings again. The headset that stopped working
in the beginning of this situation is one that I have had for a while and used on Xbox live many times in the past. Took that headset and plugged it into a cell phone and played music through it. So it's not the plug or headset itself that is staying muted.
But went out and bought another headset just to see if this could be resolved and still the mute symbol stays on which is near the battery symbol in the top right of the tv screen. Funny thing is.... If I plug in an old controller which the joystick is broke,
and put either of the two headsets I have now into that controller.... The symbol actually goes away. It registers there is a headset plugged into it. But not matter what I do, there is still no sound, and mic does not work. I also spent several hours online
over the last two days reading posts. And any posts that I have found dealing with the same scenario, seem to look for help, and then the posts stop without a resolution. Hope someone can help!
