Can’t find External Hard Drive

So during the whole signin error crisis yesterday, I plunged in my external hard drive to move a game over to it but I accidentally clicked “for media” and I want to change it to format device but it doesn’t show up in storage management even though my Xbox
recognizes that it’s there. I looked at Xbox support and surprise it was no help. Please help, I just want to play my game without having to star over.

Hard Drive Storage Limit

if adverts for "compatible" external hard drives are any indication it would seem the external storage patch should be coming some time soon although I note it wont be in the first patch released.

Not sure , I'll check and let you know what I find.

ok , I found out how to do it . Find the settings then go to System then from System find the column that has Storage listed at the top. Underneath it should have "Manage Storage" . Then when I click on that it says Storage Select a device to see its options and I have an Internal and my formatted X box external hard drive . Move the Highlight from the Internal to the External hard drive and click the "A" button on the controller and it brings up a list
View Contents , Install here by default , Rename , and Format.
So just highlight the Install here by Default and your games will install on the External hard drive instead of the Internal.

I am not sure what you have tried up to this point, but here is the official article about troubleshooting external drive detection: Troubleshoot External Storage Drive Detection | Xbox One External Storage

If it still doesn't detect, check that the drive is detected if you were to plug it in to a PC. Also check that the drive isn't showing signs of dying, like putting it up to your ear and listening for loud clicks, or a consistent, repetitive pattern of clicking
and/or whirring.

I saw somewhere that you could download dying light 2 onto a external hard drive, and it would be the Xbox one version because it said that series x games can’t be played from the external…

Has anyone tested this to confirm?

If the external hard drive is the possible cause then try and update something while the hard drive is disconnected.

It may be that your game is on the external hard drive but your default location for downloading games in your internal hard drive so when it goes to update it can't find the game as it isn't in the default location. If this is the case you would need to
make sure that the games being updated are on the internal hard drive before updating.

Hey aj thank you yes I have the Xbox one s and an external hard drive. And I think it’s installed in my storage and yes I can’t load into any games

Is this game stored on your Internal Storage or External hard drive? If it's on your External Hard drive kindly move it to your Internal Storage then remove the hard drive. This is to check if it's due to the external hard drive.
