Can't download Xbox Live Profile on to Xbox 360 Bad Password/Bad Credentials Error 80072741

Hello, I recently bought a used 360 and I cannot download my Xbox Live Profile. I have tried deleting profiles, clearing the cache, formatting the HD, redoing the initial settings and have changed my xbox live password and nothing has worked and I continually get the error message that the password is incorrect or the something is wrong with the credentials (error 80072741), however, I am able to log into my account and access my profile both from my pc and my xbox series x.

I also just tried creating a new profile with a different email account. I was able to get through the process up until it was creating the account and showed a progress bar, it then errored out and kicked me back to the dashboard. I went back to see if I could I finish the process and was able to select the newly created profile, however when it asked my to log in it once again said the password as invalid for this brand new account that I had attempted to make several seconds before.

I checked some old reddit threads on r/x360 and it seemed that others experienced this issue, but it was a problem on Microsofts side. Any ideas?

Hi! My name is Ben a fellow member here in the community and hope you are doing well!

It seems you have tried other troubleshooting already. With regards to the account you cannot use, does it somehow have a 2 step verification enabled? Or password could be more than 16 character?

These are the most common cause why the password or login will not be accepted on a 360 console. Since Xbox 360 only accepts account that has less than 16 character password, if ever you have 2 step verification on you need to disable it or create an app password.

In case your account has 2 step, you may follow the steps on this link on how to create an app password https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/xbox-360/se...

After that, use it to sign in again on the Xbox 360 console to setup your profile.

Thank you for the reply. I thought for sure I had turned off 2FA, but thanks to your post decided to check one more time, and wouldn't you know it, I in fact had it turned on. I created the app password, entered that into the 360 and was able to download my profile and sign into live with no issues. Needless to say I feel quite silly

Thanks for getting back to us! How about your password? I suggest to try making it short at least 12 characters will do just to test if you will be able to login.

I have this old 360 console as well and I can sign in just fine though my password 12 characters only to be exact.

I can't download my Microsoft profile on my xbox 360. Every time i try, it says that there's a problem with my credentials or that my password didnt work. Is Live not supported on 360 anymore???

You my need to reset your password when is it telling you that your credentials are incorrect it is actually telling you that your password does not match your account
