Can't change legacy gamertag on the change gamertag site

I checked somewhere and it says the name isnt in use. Either way if it was taken I would like to change it to something else

The legacy tag shows with the number because you were given a suffix. In areas that haven't been updated to work with the new gamertag policy, it will show the numbers added to the tag. Even if you were to try changing it on a 360 to the same name without the numbers, it wouldn't let you since the name is already in use.

You're not understanding his question. It's not a question of a gamertag being in use, it's the fact that you are unable to change the legacy gamertag without first changing your new gt that can be whatever you choose. Only then can you hit customize on the legacy tag, which is still the primary tag in games. In his case he has the tag he wants therefore he isn't able to change the tag progressing him to the needed screen to customize the legacy tag. The problem is Microsoft added a "new" gt system without removing the previous then screw it up further by only allowing one to be customized.

For this kind of issues, we recommend clearing the cache and restart the device and try again. If the still persists, we suggest trying on another browser and see if that works;However, if you still can't change the gamertag, it means the one that you choosed is already used.

I'm not sure if you got what I was saying so I will try to clear things up.

I chnaged my gamertag to "Von Jahil" and I also changed my legacy gamertag or whatever you call it to "Von Jahil" (I mean the gamertag on older or incompatible games that do not support the new gamertag system).

It changed my gamertag to "Von Jahil" but it failed to save my custom gamertag for older games and now it has this ugly numbers even though I deleted them because I don't like numbers in my name.

I now cannot change this legacy gamertag because it wants me to change my normal one. You can only change the custom one on the second step of the process and I can't get there.

Would apreciate further help.

You can easily change your Xbox Live gamertag. If your gamertag was created for you during your initial Xbox Live sign-up (meaning, you did not choose your gamertag), you can change the gamertag once for free. Additional Xbox Live gamertag changes cost extra
