Can't change gamertag on Xbox 360?

So I read on the Xbox forums that your gamertag can only be 12 characters long, but that if you have an Xbox 360, you can change to a 15 character long gamertag.

Well, I dusted off the ol' 360, factory reset it, and gave it a shot. I heard that some players were getting 2 Xbox gamertags after changing. Fine by me! But here's the problem:

Everytime I try to change my name I get hit with an error code (80182300).

The name I'm looking for is available, the 360 tells me so, but it seems no matter what I do, the error code shows. Anybody have a solution? I'd love to get the 15 character limit GT so I can match it with my existing Socials, but I'm just hitting a brick wall here.

Where does it say you can't change your gamertag on Xbox 360?

Xbox 360's are still online and still being used and still playing games so Xbox 360 is a valid way to change your gamertag... you are right, there is a bug and the bug is that I changed my gamertag in a valid way and its not propagating through the platform properly!

also if you look above you see that Harry Callahan is also listed on my gamertag!

I can't change it on xbox.com when i click on change gamertag it says "How to change your gamertag on your Xbox 360 console" And thats all thats on that page And yes i've cleared my system cache

the ability to change to 15 character gamertags on the 360 was stopped a while ago i think, it was causing issues with the new system. only 12 characters and below now.

Spaces don't count when you're trying to change your gamertag to something, even though searching for gamertags doesn't ignore the spaces.

Q IV is a current Xbox 360 gamertag
B HI looks like an original Xbox gamertag; maybe it will get recycled some day
ikr is a current Xbox 360 gamertag

You can't find out for sure whether a gamertag is in use except by trying to change your gamertag to it.

I don't believe that Xbox has any updates releasing regarding gamertag changes. As for the Steve tag. If they are showing 2 tags then it may be an issue between the older 360 gamertag and the Xbox One/Series gamertag. There are some things the 360 can't handle such as length of tag or password and so it shows as a separate one.
