    Hi!

I've been able to record up to 1 hour (as 4K resolution) on my USB stick without any issues but today when I've tried to record a footage of my gameplay, it says that the only available length is 15 or 30 seconds. I've been trying to unplug it and plug it again but it didn't help. I've also tried restarting my console or even formating the USB drive. I've even tried using different ports but that didn't help either Can't capture more than 30 seconds on USB :(

The device is visible in the "Storage devices" and is formated as NTFS and is set to be the main source of capture location

Here are the pictures of it:

Can't capture more than 30 seconds on USB

    Hello Krzysztof Pijarczyk,

    Greetings!

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

Based on the description, you are unable to record up to 1 hour using your external drive which was working before. Let us check and see on what we can do to help resolve your concern in a timely manner.

It is possible that your external drive was not set as your capture location in your Xbox settings because by default, the Xbox will record game clips to the internal storage, which has a limit of 30 seconds for 4K captures. It seems that the default storage for you recording was your internal drive of your console. We are going to check it though by following the steps below. We are going to set your external drive as your captures location and try recording more than 30 seconds if it will go through after checking and making sure that the USB was selected for your game capture location.

    Here are the steps:

    • Plug your external drive into a vacant USB port on your Xbox. Your Xbox will prompt you if you'd like to use the connect hard drive for media or games and apps. Make sure to select Use for media,
    • Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
    • Go to Profile & system > Settings > Preferences > Capture & share.
    • Select Capture location, and then choose your external drive.
After doing this, you can record game clips up to 1 hour long on your external drive. You can also transfer them to your PC for editing or sharing.

Can't capture more than 30 seconds on USB

    Hello Krzysztof Pijarczyk,

Thank you for your prompt response.

The files that you have attached through the links cannot be accessible in our end that is why we provided speculation on the possible root cause of the problem and thanks for confirming that it was set up properly.

If we may ask, can you tell us the remaining available storage for your external drive? And to help us identify if the issue is not related on the external drive, is there a chance to use different USB and use to record up to 1 hour? If the problem is happening when using another external drive then we can say that this might be a bug or glitches with the system and we can report this to our Xbox engineers so this can be investigated. You may use Xbox Report a problem app by downloading it from Microsoft store and follow the steps on how to reach this concern to our developer's ears. You can check on the article provided here: Provide feedback to Team Xbox | Xbox Support

How do I record 5 minutes of gameplay instead of 30 sec?

You currently can't record more than 30 seconds at a time.

To record more you need an external capture device like Elgato offer but Microsoft is bringing more options over the coming months.
