Cannot See Friend/Invites Minecraft Xbox One LAN

I just bought a brand new Xbox One X and Minecraft (not xbox one edition) to play with my roommate on his Xbox One S. He had been playing xbox one edition minecraft and after researching the lack of updates, he also purchased the standard edition of Minecraft.
Both of us have completely open privacy settings, have double checked the settings online and on console, i have verified we are friends online and on console, i can see him online and in game through xbox dashboard but not in game. Neither of us have xbox
live gold accounts. We are both connected to the same wifi.

I have researched this issue for hours and ive seen hundreds of other people with the same issue with no solutions listed except checking privacy settings and reinstalling the game, both of which we have done several times.

Please help. Just spent 54 dollars to play this together and we've gotten nowhere.

Same here. The friends tab in Minecraft xbox changes the number underneath it as my LAN friends enter their world on their devices, so xbox is definitely recognising that they are there. I see that number change within seconds of them starting on their
device. But underneath that, it still says "your friends are not playing Minecraft right now" when they quite clearly are. My friends on other devices see each others joinable worlds, but I cant see those same worlds from my xbox. They can see my xbox worlds
and join, but i cannot see theirs. Help!

Also the option to join or invite to game from xbox dashboard is greyed out. I imagine this is because we don't have Xbox live gold, but i guess it could be an error with the game.

We've also tried sending the invite to each other from each xbox and with multiple worlds, also tried with friends of friends, friends only, and invite only settings.

This used to work xbox to xbox on LAN, currently I cannot get it to work from XBOX to XBOX, but my PC recognizes that the XBOX's are on the LAN and I can join either one. I am not sure what changed. The XBOX's can see that there are friends playing, just
not that they are on LAN and joinable.

Please Follow These Steps :

To invite your Xbox friends to join you in a Minecraft game, select the Play button on the main menu in Minecraft, select Members, and then select the Invite button next to your friend’s name. To invite Xbox friends to play in Microsoft Realms, see Minecraft Realms and Realms Plus page.
