Cannot register controller without actual Xbox?

Yesterday I bought an Xbox One Elite wireless controller. I was ploughing through the Xbox web site to register but it's rejecting the controller's serial number (invalid). I later read other discussions mentioning that a controller can only be registered
under an Xbox console? I'm just using the new controller on my gaming PC, and don't own an actual Xbox.

Does this mean I have no warranty coverage?

Not able to register the xbox wireless controller

I bought a xbox wireless controller in Malaysia. every time i try to register the device online, it prompts "Cannot register now please try after sometime". help to register.

Hi, I have basicly the same problem, but my bumper is already falling ot of the controller!

Problem is, i can't register my controller, in fact you cannot register any Xbox accessories for repair and service

So what am I supposed to do now?

 

Hi! It looks like you can only register your console on the site.

 

You can contact xbox support by going to support.xbox.com/contact-us and they have a way of getting it registered for warranty purposes.

You really only need to do the registration if there is an issue that you would need to send it in for repair under the warranty.

You would want to make sure you keep a copy of your receipt because you will need that for proof of purchase.

 

Had a web chat with Xbox support and she confirmed have to initiate another web chat for warranty replacement should I encounter problem with the controller.
