cannot launch PC Xbox app games

I have an active XBox PC pass. PC specs are ok - ryzen 5700X, 32gb ram, Radeon 6900XT... Steam games run with no issues

Since beginning of November I cannot launch XBox app games, they were showing an error "trial license has expired"

December 3rd I decided to fix it and spent whole evening on XBox support chat. They concluded that I needed to reset my PC

Yesterday I have reset my PC and upgraded to Windows 11 to make sure I am as up-to-date as possible. Installed latest updates, GPU drivers.

Yesterday and today I get an error when launching any game: unsupported 16-bit application"

The only game that works is "State of decay 2"

If I launch in compatibility mode as admin - I get same error

I have spent a couple of hours on support call-back today

first support person said he would call me back - he didn't

second support person said that this is a Windows issue and forwarded my call. I waited for someone to pick up the phone but they dropped my off after 45 minutes of waiting

Chat support was unable to fix the issue either

I have also tried removing and re-installing gaming services and xbox app but am getting same error

I have now invested 3 days into fixing this issue but am not getting any closer to making XBox games run

And call-back support is no longer available when I enter my phone number. I tried 5 times already

chat support was unable to fix this issue and escalated this issue

but "connect with specialist" window does not let me type anything, chat box is greyed out

at one point someone started chatting to me but i could not reply

Update: managed to connect to specialist and through multiple disconnections of QuickAssist managed to present the issue. He/she will escalate this issue

I'd recommend reporting the issue in the Feedback Hub so Team Xbox can investigate it.

Press the Start button, and then enter Feedback Hub in the search box. Open the Feedback Hub app, and then select Report a problem.

Enter your details under Summarise your feedback and Explain in more detail (optional). Consider the following questions when deciding what details to include:

- What is the problem or unexpected behaviour?

- What steps did you take to encounter the problem?

- What additional software, hardware, or accessories were you using when you encountered the problem?

- Were there any specific error codes or messages you saw when you encountered the problem or behaviour? If so, what was the specific error code or message?

- If you can show the problem, make sure to include screenshots.

When you're done, select Submit.

If anyone is facing same issue

My issue seems to be resolved once I move games from drive C to slow external drive (Drive E in my case)

If it helps to identify the bug: my OS is Win11 64 bit and drive C is M.2 Samsung Evo 970 1TB

Try this workaround

Open the Xbox app on phone or PC and sign in

Search for the game that cannot be installed

Press Download to console and select the destination console

Once the game has installed on that console, insert the disc and try to launch it

According to your description, you seem to have encountered an error in the Xbox update. The "87" you encountered is generally caused by an incorrect command or format error.

Can your Microsoft Store currently download apps normally?

If your Microsoft Store can work normally, it is recommended that you update through the Microsoft Store.

If your Xbox program does not work properly, I recommend that you try to redeploy the Microsoft Store and re-download the Xbox program and game services.

Uninstall Microsoft Store

1. Search for "Windows PowerShell" in the search bar and run as an administrator.

2. In the PowerShell window, type the following command:

Get-AppxPackage *windowsstore* | Remove-AppxPackage

3. Wait for the uninstall process to complete.

4. Once completed, Microsoft Store will be uninstalled from your system.

Uninstall Gaming Services

Get-AppxPackage *gamingservices* -allusers | remove-appxpackage -allusers

Wait for the uninstall to complete and Gaming Services will be uninstalled from your system

If you have uninstalled Microsoft Store and reinstall it on Windows 11, please follow the steps below:

Search for "Windows PowerShell" in the search bar and run as an administrator.

In the PowerShell window, enter the following command:

Get-AppxPackage -AllUser

Find Microsoft Windows Store in the list after the execution is completed and copy the contents of Install Location.

Execute the following command in the PowerShell window (replace <Install location> with the location you copied):

Add-AppxPackage -register "<Install location>\\AppxManifest.xml" -disabledevelopmentmode

Wait for the deployment to complete, and you can find the Microsoft Store in the Start menu.

Uninstall the Xbox program.

1. Click the Windows icon in the lower left corner of the screen to open the Windows 11 Start menu.

2. Select "Settings" and then click "Apps".

3. In the list of installed applications, find "Xbox" and click it.

4. Click "Uninstall" and follow the on-screen instructions to confirm the uninstallation.

5. Wait for the uninstall process to complete, and restart your computer if necessary.

Finally, try to re-download the Xbox program in the Microsoft Store, and the game service will generally be downloaded simultaneously.
