    Cannot download Gears 5 on Windows 10


    So, I bought PC game pass and shortly upgraded to ultimate game pass through various deals on the internet about 2 weeks ago. Since then, I have been trying to install Gears 5, but keep running into issues.

    First, I tried installing the game through the Xbox (beta) app. This worked, but the first time I tried to play it I was told I needed an update. I was never able to get this update to install - the download would not progress. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling
    Gears 5 though the Xbox app. This download would never even get started. I would click "Install" the app would start for a second, before dropping me back to the install button. This went on for a week or week and a half, and I played and installed other games
    though the Xbox (beta) app with no issues.

    Starting a few days ago, when I try to install Gears 5 (either though the Microsoft store of the Xbox (beta) app), the download will actually start. However, the download never progresses past 217.1 MB. When I try to cancel the download of Gears 5, a second
    later it comes back into the download queue and locks at 217.1 MB. This occurs on both the Microsoft Store and the app.

    I have tried and checked various things to fix this. Here's what I know/have tried:

    • I am running Windows 10 Home version 1903
    • Windows Update tells me that I am currently up to date.
    • My computer (at least) meets the minimum requirements for Gears 5
    • I have tried installing both the base and ultimate edition of Gears 5
    • I have reset the Microsoft store cache several times
    • I have tried reinstalling the Xbox app several times
    • I have tried re-signing into my Microsoft account
    • I have tried running the Microsoft Store app troubleshooting tool
    • I have tried repairing and resetting both the Xbox (beta) app and the Microsoft Store.

    Any insight anyone has on this would be appreciated. I'm very frustrated and confused. At this point, I would be happy with Gears 5 not constantly trying to keep downloading itself (and getting stuck at 217.1 MB) every time I cancel the download.

    Hey AltoHercules254,

    Try these steps if you haven't already - they fixed my download issues.

    • open windows app store (microsoft store)
    • log out from your primary account (in the microsoft store)
    • go to windows services
    • stop "windows update service"
    • erase contents of folder: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
    • restart your computer
    • open windows app store, log in yourself
    • start xbox app (beta)
    • download game

    I had problem playing some games on pc, see if there are any updates on Win10, it made me able to play some games that were not opening.

    I’m having a very similar problem (Gears 5 is dow load but its infinitely trying to download an update or something). Definitely going to try this. I’ve done it before for corrupted updates but didn’t think about it here.

    I actually feel pretty dumb - I just found a solution to this problem after searching these forums for about 1.5 hours.

    In case anyone else runs into a similar situation, here's the solution that worked for me (quoted from another thread):

    This is what fixed this problem for me.

    • open windows app store (microsoft store)
    • log out from your primary account (in the microsoft store)
    • go to windows services
    • stop "windows update service"
    • erase contents of folder: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
    • restart your computer
    • open windows app store, log in yourself
    • start xbox app (beta)
    • download game
