Cancel Xbox game pass when my card has expired

I have an Xbox game pass Ultimate subscription that I was intending to cancel. However, before I got a chance to cancel, I got an email saying that my payment card had expired and to please update or the service would be cancelled. I didn't update the card, because I wanted to cancel so I figured I would just let the service lapse.

However, my service has not been cancelled. I just keep getting the emails every month saying that my payment has failed and that I risk my service getting cancelled. I can't manually cancel my service because it requires me to update my card first, and that would charge me all of the missed payments. I haven't used the service at all (because in my mind I wasn't paying for it and therefore it would have been cancelled) so I would be paying money I can't afford (cost of living crisis and all that) for a service I haven't used and wanted to cancel.

There is no way to contact a human person through Xbox support (there is no phone number, the callback function doesn't work, and live chat isn't offered as an option for the problem I describe - if I pick another random problem to get the live chat option, I am stuck in queue for a live agent that never moves). So I can't resolve this impasse.

I am therefore hoping that either:

1. Someone from Xbox support is reading this and can help me cancel my subscription without paying for a service I haven't been using.

or

2. Someone can give me a way to speak to a human Xbox support person.

I actually managed to get through on the live chat in the end and they cancelled it for me without charging for the past-due payment.

Usually you’re going to be charged for 1 month. This is commonly known as past due subscription . If you don’t pay this your account will be restricted to make future purchases.

I case you didn’t do it please turn off recurring billing via subscriptions page:

Currently I have Game Pass Ultimate subscription with recurring billing off and don't want this subscription service once it expires 10/22/22, so do I just activate my prepaid xbox live gold subscription card on 10/23/22, or do I actually have to cancel game pass ultimate subscription for my account on 10/23/22 manually before redeeming and activating my xbox live gold prepaid 12 month card on 10/23/22?

Also, if you select turn off recurring billing on your account for your current game pass ultimate subscription, does that automatically cancel your prepaid game pass ultimate subscription on its expiration date? or is it requirement that you still manually cancel Game Pass Ultimate on or after its prepaid expiration date if you wish to switch back to xbox live gold using a prepaid subscription card?

When Canceling a Gold, Game Pass, or Ultimate Game pass any remaining time will stay until it has expired. In the case of The ultimate since it converts your remaining Gold to Ultimate once your "expires on" date is over it will return to non-gold without
gamepass. At that point if you choose to only have Gold just add Xbox Live gold prepaid codes or a Credit card for monthly.
