Can you play games off an external HDD on Series X?

When I first got my XSX I tried playing games off my external seagate 2tb and after a period of time it would give me error (0x87e1001f), I just got a 5tb WD Black and my friend said he plays his games off the external just fine never had an issue, I tried playing battlefront 2 and it seemed fine but would like to know if anyone has issues running games off their drives. This excludes X/S games obviously.

external hdd's are not fast enough for the new series s/x optimised games and therefore have to run off the internal ssd or the new expansion cards, all xbox one games and 360 BC games can run off your external hdd.

series s and x games can only run from the internal storage or official (rip off) expansion card. only xbox one and 360 bc games can run off the external hdd.

So I cannot download GTA Xbox series s/x edition on my external hardware?

You can still use external HDD for your Xbox/Xbox 360/Xbox One games but you can't play Series X/S games from them,

Series X/S games can only be played from the internal or external storage card,

with game file size's getting bigger, that 1Tb internal NVMe SSD is going fill up quick.

any non X|S specific games should run fine from an external hard drive, as long as the drive and cable meet the requirements.

as a side note a failing extenal hard drive can cause some weird issues, like controller or dashboard lag or game update or game starting issues, that can happen periodically
