It's entirely up to the game designer how they implement crossplay multiplayer.

Some games allow all modes to be played crossplay. I only mentioned, that some games restrict you to certain modes for crossplay.

Just so you are not disappointed if you really wanted to play for example Versus in Gears of War with your PC friend. But the co-op modes Horde and story campaign will work.
