Ok that is wrong. all xbox 360 consoles (inc arcade and 4gb - u will need an offical hdd thogh - 20gb 60gb 120gb 250gb) can play xbox original games.

You'd need to do exactly what the message tells you to. You need to attach an original Xbox 360 hard drive to your console in order to be able to play original Xbox games.

If you have a Xbox 360 S 4GB or a Xbox 360 Original Arcade console then you'd need to get yourself an original Xbox 360 hard drive (either for the original Xbox 360, or the Xbox 360 Slim). This information is told to you when purchasing the game in the games
description. An original Xbox 360 hard drive can be purchased from most gaming related retail stores like Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Gamestop, etc.

About your question, kinda yes and no. Sorry if that sounds confusing. Some games aren’t supported, so that’s the “no” part, but you do need an official Xbox 360 hard drive to make it work. That’s because backward compatibility depends on software emulation profiles that are stored on the hard drive.

There’s an old thread discussing the same thing, and it’s funny because someone mentioned a recent update that actually added backward compatibility, but only for a few games.
