Can not send messages without entering phone number

I receive an error that states Messaging is not working for your account. I click the more info button and am sent to Why Can’t I Send Messages from Xbox One or Xbox App?
Which states I must add a phone number. I will not add my phone number, so I click "No" on "Was the article helpful?" which mentions I should not add contact info to protect my privacy.

How can I unlock my account without a phone number?

Please stop pretending that asking me for phone numbers makes my account more secure.

I've been getting the security proof question EVERY time I try to sign in to my account too. I already have a phone number and email set up. I had resolved to not give Microsoft another point of contact to send me spam email and spam texts. After months
and months of this, I finally cracked and entered my cell phone to let them send me a damn code text message. After entering the code, I thought I was good. Then the next time I booted the conosle, I got the same prompt and it wouldn't let me in unless I
gave it a phone number to send texts to. I tried entering my cell phone again, and it said I already had that one on file, it wanted a THIRD phone number. I DON'T HAVE THREE PHONE NUMBERS. It said to go to X-box.com to fix it. When I tried, it will not
let me in without sending a text message to my home land line. Selecting my cell phone line that I had entered was not an option. I wasn't at home with my laptop to receive a call. Do I seriously have to receive a proof text and enter a code every time
I log in? For the love of God, I just want to play my video games!

i can't send messages on my xbox account without a number. that's my main problem. maybe i could use one of my skype fren's numbers, since that works? i don't know. thanks for helping me think outside the box!

Sorry to hear it. This procedure is used to make sure that you are the owner of the account. The information is not given out to 3rd parties, etc. If, however, you do not want to do this you can try contacting phone support to see if they can help with

I can receive messages, but cannot send them. I have tried to enter my phone number, but I don't get any code. The email I used is from my iPad, does that have something to do with it? I beg for help !! \•-•/
