Can not purchase game

Credit, subscriptions etc is linked to the account that purchased/redeem it, not the console. He can sign in with his account on a Xbox 360 and he will be able to purchase the game.

Its not a gift he bought it at gamestop and already redeemed it, is that just for xbox one? Can he somehow link is xbox 360 and still use the currency or is the currency only for the xbox one?

I am unsure if a Xbox Gift is refundable. I know a Microsoft Gift card is refundable if brought from Microsoft and in't use within 14 days. Do your son have a Xbox One? If so, he can use use the gift card for Gold/Gampass subscriptions and other Xbox
One games.

As the game is a 360 game, you can only use your account balance when making the purchase from an Xbox 360 console. Via the xbox one or Xbox.com won't recognise it.

It is to do with the way the 360 store was designed.
