Can my external hard drive cause my xbox series x to freeze

If possible, I'd suggest momentarily moving the console closer to a wall outlet to see if the noise you heard is also present when not using the surge protector.

Besides the HDD and expansion card, are there any other external devices plugged into your console?

Regarding the freezing problem, does it happen every time you go to "My Games and Apps" while the HDD is plugged in?

If it's only happened once and your console was recently purchased, then I'd say there's nothing to worry about. I do believe this was caused by the external hard drive and not by a hardware problem.

Regarding the ventilation of your console, I'd suggest making sure it has a minimum of 4 - 6 inches of clearance on all sides and that it's not positioned inside an enclosed cabinet. Also because it only happened once in about 3 months I feel like hardware issues are more frequent and my console seems to be well ventilated and also seems to be running well on most days.

I currently have it plugged into a surge protector that has enough output for the xbox since an outlet is not to close by i haven't had any issues until i started using the external.
