I am unsure if a Xbox Gift is refundable. I know a Microsoft Gift card is refundable if brought from Microsoft and in't use within 14 days. Do your son have a Xbox One? If so, he can use use the gift card for Gold/Gampass subscriptions and other Xbox
One games.

You can't buy a gift card with a gift card. You would use the funds to buy something through Xbox/Microsoft.

Xbox gift cards and Microsoft gift cards are essentially the same thing. They'll both add funds to your Microsoft account balance that can be used to purchase games for Xbox or Windows or movies/TV through Microsoft. So yes, after you purchase Halo for PC, you could then buy something else for your console or buy a movie or something like that.

unfortunately, you can't use your microsoft account balance to buy gift cards. But you can gift something to your kid with the money on your account.
