Does it make any difference if I use a 2.5 cable to connect the hard drive to my Series S console ? And if it does should I change the hard drive or only the cable ?

    :)

Can I use an external hard drive with 2.5 usb cable with the Series S

Hello , thank you for responding . Im not having issues , I got a hard drive with a 2.5 usb cable and was wondering if it will work on my Xbox Series S . Im just worried because i know nothing about hard drives and I dont know if it will cause any harm/damage to the console . If its just the transfer speeds , im ok with that.

Hi and thanks for reaching out. I hope you’re doing well. I'm an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you and I'll be happy to help you.

It is generally recommended to use a USB 3.0 cable to connect a hard drive to your Xbox Series S console, as this will provide the fastest data transfer speeds and the best performance. Using a USB 2.0 cable may cause slower transfer speeds and potentially lead to performance issues or instability.

In most cases, it is not necessary to change the hard drive itself if you are experiencing issues with a USB 2.0 cable. Upgrading to a USB 3.0 cable should resolve the issue.

    Xbox one series S & portable SSD's

    Hi,

You can use USB external SSD drives on Series X/S or you can buy a 2.5" PC SSD and attach it to a SATA to USB 3.1 adaptor.

These drives are a lot faster than a standard USB 3 external HDD. However, you can only play Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox BC titles directly from them. Series X/S games can only be played from the internal drive or the optional Expansion Card.

    Xbox one X

All Xbox One X consoles contain a standard 2.5" mechanical hard drive that is not user replicable. There are no official models with an SSD. Any discussions regarding replacing the internal drive are strictly prohibited on these forums.

You can use an external SSD on a One X. This can be one you can buy ready to plug in with the built-in USB cable or you can buy a standard SATA III SSD and attach it to a SATA to USB adaptor or via drive enclosure connected via USB.

Due to the low I/O speed of the One X, caused by its rather slow CPU, you can't get the same speed as you would with an external USB SSD on the Series X|S consoles.

    External Hard drive

And a credit card sized 500g...SSD by SAMSUNG T5....USB 3.1 Gen2 (up to 10gbper sec.).
Your drive is rated USB 3.1 Gen 2 and it can do up to 10 Gbit/s, but you won't get that speed on the One X as its USB ports are only USB 3.1 Gen 1 which are up to 5 Gbit/s.

Faster than a slow 2.5" 5,400 RPM mechanical hard drive for sure, but you could have achieved similar performance with a 2.5" SSD in a external hard drive enclosure.
