However, what I can recommend is to use the voucher or Microsoft Account Balance to purchase items for your son's account.

To do this, you can sign in to your Microsoft account and use your gift card balance to make a purchase on the Microsoft Store. The purchase will be charged to your Microsoft Account Balance and will be added to your son's account.

I'd like to clarify that you cannot transfer funds from a gift card or from a Microsoft account balance from one account to another once the code has been redeemed. Every individual account has its own balance so there is no shared family balance if you have
them added to a family group. Therefore, you needed to log into your son's account on micosoft.com/redeem, not your own account, to apply the credits to his account to use how he likes. The referenced support link states,
"Your Microsoft account balance and gift cards are non-transferable to another person or Microsoft account. For more info, see Microsoft
gift cards terms and conditions." To add money to your child's account using the method described in the article, you need to use a payment option that is associated with a bank (credit/debit card) or another source of funds (ex. PayPal). Customer support
will not be able to transfer any funds. The best thing I can recommend is following what Smwutches suggested by gifting the
item you wanted to buy with the currency to your son.

You cannot transfer a balance from one account to another. You can gift new funds to a family member but not funds already on an account. I have this same issue and found a forum response explaining it.
