From what I understand you can plug the play and charge kit USB into anything like a laptop or any other powered USB port. But as for the disconnect problem, there are two types of USB extensions. You should just need to get an 'Active' Usb repeater extension
and it should work.

You could plug the controller plug and charge kit through the USB port with your xbox and charge it that way.
