So my gen 1 Xbox One X finally gave up the ghost. The Internal HDD began failing so I moved most of my data to the external drive I'd been using and that kept it on its legs a little longer... but all things must eventually die and so it did. Ive talked to Support and they agree with me that its a dead hard drive and that I am outside of the warranty period so servicing it will cost about half of what a new Series X will cost.

Under these circumstances are we able to install our own replacement drives or is replacing known faulty equipment thats died a violation that results in a ban? My plan was to buy a Series X but at this point, they are unobtainium and I rather like to get back to gaming on my Xbox One X in the meantime and without having to spend half of the cost of a Series X to send my in, have it wait in a queue to get fixed then get shipped back to me (hoping that both ways the postal service doesnt accidently lose it, destroy it or send it somewhere else entirely)

    :)

Self-repair violates the terms of service and would put you at risk for being banned.

You agreed to the terms of service, so there's nothing you can really do even though its extremely ridiculous. You can probably still get it repaired and be fine.

Yeah, that's completely ridiculous for what they'd require you to do if you wanted to get it repaired with them. You could probably take it to one of your local tech repair shops and have them fix it if you'd prefer to not do it yourself, though if the device can detect any modifications or not I do not really know (I've had to get a disc drive fixed for my Xbox in the past and it worked completely fine after). As for your thing too about debating on getting a series X, I'd highly recommend moving to PC at this point as its looking a lot better for a down the line kinda purchase. The obvious downside is the GPU scalping issue going on and supply shortages.

So here in lies the rub, I talked to MS. To ship it there and back and have them fix it is around 250 USD for the round trip and them to drop a hard drive in there. I was told on Friday that due to covid, there's a 4 - 6 month delay from when its received til when its sent back repaired. If this was weeks I might go for it, if it was days id be praising the techgods... but were talking months and I do understand that with the pandemic everything's impacted but it just burns a bit. Plus at 250 that's literally half the cost of a new Series X whenever ones available just to do something I can do myself (I quite literally work in an IT department). I guess maybe my next step is going to MS official and asking their blessing to do the work myself citing the pandemic, the wait time and that I can quite literally use OEM parts and see if they might budge (I doubt it but I got to hope at this point as its either do that or risk my account)

Thanks for the answer, Though it is extremely disheartening to know that I cannot even repair a known defect with out MS trying to bludgeon me over the head for daring to do so. I may have to seriously rethink what I actually want to do as far as getting a series X cause im sure those will have failures out of warranty too and carry with it the same ridiculous terms of service.
