Can I charge the Play & Charge battery from my Xbox Controller if I plug it into a laptop?

My Elite controller is not even syncing to the laptop... I just realized after gaming for a couple of days with it that I was never transitioning to wired controller when I plugged the cable in. The controller is totally dead unless I have batteries for
it. play in charge is useless if I can't charge it from the controller. gave all my spares to family.

Hello I have just taken the battery out of my controller and plugged it in to my console with only the usb cable and can confirm that without a play and charge battery in the controller that the light on the usb does not like up. It looks like it is only
used to confirm if the charge status on the play an charge battery.

I would use a phone charger, but as it can't hold a charge I kinda always have it connected to my laptop. Plus these controllers are very thirsty for AA batteries so I am using it plugged in.

this is due to the charging station and its batteries being third party, they don't have the required connections to the pin array int he controller, the charge station batteries will have external pins on them so when the controller sits on the mount it then charges the battery.

only official plug and play batteries from microsoft can charge via the usb on the controller, they do this through different pins internally.
