I know this sounds crazy, but is it definitely not one of the other party member's headset / microphone having issues and causing a problem with the audio?

It sounds like an issue with the headset. Try plugging the headset into another device to see if you get the same kind of feedback. If you do, you can bet it’s the headset.

This would sound like the most likely issue. I had bought a new headset and had similar issues. Turns out the cable was frayed at the plus end. If you held the cable downward it would work just fine. Also had one headset (old) start to have issues with the
right headphone. Everything came through clear on the left. Could just be a faulty headset.

Do you notice these crackles in any other application or program on your device? If you are using wired headphones, make sure you have plugged them in all the way. With usage, some headphones become a bit finicky and may require certain orientations to counteract
wear and audio distortions.

Additionally, try making sure your drivers are up to date for whatever audio playback device you are using. You can do this through

device manager Check for any windows updates or app updates that may have patches this issue.
